More Than Just Math Blog

Educating our future should always include…

more than just math!

More Than Just Math Blog’s Purpose

I have been a math teacher for more than 15 years and a mom of twins for five years.  I love creating activities that excite and ignite the curiosity of both my students and my own children.  Education goes far beyond simply building knowledge of content.  Learning thrives on relationships, connections to real-world experiences, and meaningful, fun, relevant engagement.   I strive to develop the entire child by focusing on the best version of themselves with a hunger to continue learning, and a passion to change the world for the better.

I also love to shop… especially for items that are useful, high-quality, and educational.  And the only thing better than a great find for myself, classroom or children is sharing these with others to enjoy as well!

Join me on this journey of learning, connecting, inspiring, and encouraging our students and kids to live passion-filled lives as we focus on… more than just math.

Math Class (& Mom) Favorites

I am passionate about creating a classroom environment that focuses on developing the whole child. I want my students to learn more than just math… I strive to provide my students with opportunities to build problem solving strategies, communication skills, reasoning abilities, and leadership qualities. My goal is to provide students with opportunities to learn through play, experience real world applications, utilize technology, and practice setting goals.

Learn Through Play

Providing experiences for students to practice skills through game-based learning opportunities.

Manipulatives

Ensuring students have the time to explore concepts visually to gain conceptual understanding.

Inclusion of Music

We sing, we chant, we dance not only because it helps us remember, but it makes the process fun!

Student Ownership

Students are the most important part of the learning process. I incorporate student choice and goal setting to encourage them to take part in their learning experience.

Math Apparel

Making math fun can be as simple as wearing a math shirt related to the current content to class.

Let’s Get the Energy Out!

As a mom to two very energetic kids, we spend time learning, but of course it is balanced with FUN! Even problem solving skills can be built during climbing exercises!

Learning is Fun!

Solving Mysteries

Games that involve solving a mystery are always a favorite. Check out “The Crime Against Miss PEMDAS”… a class favorite!

Real-World Experiences

When are we ever going to use this? My favorite question, thanks for asking! Want to go on a road trip to explore decimals? Let’s go!

Games

Task cards, puzzles, clip cards, I have/who has, escape rooms… let’s go beyond the worksheet in math!
